Mary Jo (MJ) Kehne
The simple ballpoint pen has captured Mary Jo (MJ) Kehne’s interest over other drawing and painting media for the past thirty years. Using random strokes, repetitive lines, multiple layers of ink; forms emerge, and a new imaginal realm is created. The process is meditative. Realizing how one part or mark can affect another is never stronger when there is a slip of the pen, or an ink blob enters the paper. Negotiations ensue often creating yet another new image. Recognizable fragments may emerge and become developed as well as bizarre imagery from somewhere deep down.
MJ Kehne was born in Baltimore and currently lives outside of the city. Following an undergraduate degree in Art Education, she began graduate work at the Maryland Institute College of Art while teaching in Baltimore City. After finishing her Masters of Fine Art (MFA), she began another graduate program in art therapy with a focus in archetypal psychology. MJ supervised the art therapy program at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center for 26 years. She continues to maintain her Licensed Clinical Professional Art Therapy (LCPAT) credential.
MJ participates in juried and solo art shows, as well as numerous art groups. She discovered the process of Zentangle, and has been a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) since 2014. It captures her approach to creating art and mirrors many life philosophies. MJ currently seek groups and venues to teach this easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
